Finding the Sacred: the cycle of life, death, life

March 28th, 2025 - May 13th, 2025
Opening Reception - Friday, March 28th, 2025 | 6 pm to 8 pm

Featuring mixed media, pottery, graphite on paper, drums, paint on bone, and photography by artists:
Monique Chiemi, Traci Isaly, Amber Jean, Kaycee Kalahar, Ashley Noble, Kelly Stevenson & Marie Stevenson

The exhibit is the product of 7 powerful and creative women working in a variety of media to explore the sacred of the cycle of life, death, life. The topic of life and death has always drawn many artists to capture but it is rare to see a show focus specifically on the topic. As we move out of the darkness and shadow of winter and into the life and rebirth of spring, it is a fitting time to explore it. Photographer Ashley Noble expresses, “It is a reminder of life’s spectacular reboot (biologically and seasonally)”. The theme of celebrating death as a part of life and what it means and gives to us flows through the work on display.

Mixed media artist Traci Isaly expresses, “Life really is like a large compost pile. We live through experiences that include all the feelings; joy, sorrow, trauma, peace, grief, excitement, love, passion, pain, anticipation, and on it goes for the human experience.  Within that ‘living’ experience, we go through many micro cycles of the life-death-life cycle. Starting at birth”

Amber Jean reflects, “Through careful attention and deep intention, each skull mirrors back not just our mortality but the transformative power of finding the sacred in the forsaken. Every piece becomes both a blessing and a testament to the stories we carry and those we leave behind.”

Come and hear the stories, personal and universal, that are told through the works in this show.

Jim Barrett & Liz Chappie-Zoller

Opening Reception | June Art Walk - Friday, June 27, 2025 | 6 pm to 8 pm
Opening during the June 27, 2025 art walk, 6-8 pm, is a show of bold animal paintings by artists Jim Barrett and Liz Chappie-Zoller.  These bold paintings steer away from traditional expressions of animals in two very different ways.

Liz Chappie-Zoller is a contemporary equine and wildlife artist, whose mixed media art is inspired by her western American landscape. Her art explores the overlapping edges of diverse cultures and celebrates our connections, supporting her belief that what we have in common is much greater than what divides us. The traditional symbolism of each artwork is deeply researched, combined with favorite relevant quotes and bits of poetry, then embellished with the urban graffiti she collects (benches) from trains passing through the remote Missouri River valley of her southwest Montana home.

Jim Barrett says of his work “My approach to making things out of thin air, with the help of pigments, canvas, paper or my guitar and my own voice, eschew questions of why and simply watch or listen to things materializing. Many times, I am surprised by what happens and I am tempted to pat myself on the back. But I know there are other forces at work of which I am not in control.  Most of my work is figurative. The figure or figures act as an anchor that holds everything else in place. The colors are applied to enhance the illusion of substance. They serve to celebrate and elevate the figure to a higher status, embellishing familiar shapes and creating a world of my own. Because it is a fictitious rendition of reality, I am allowed to discover spaces that only exist on the surface in a two-dimensional format that speaks to me and hopefully others.”

Monochrome: A Black and White World

July 25th, 2025 - August 19th, 2025
Opening Reception | July Art Walk - Friday, July 25th, 2025 | 5:30 pm to 8 pm

What is the world like if we remove color from our view?  That is the question explored by a variety of artists in a variety of media in this show.  What role does contrast play? How about the subtle shades of gray whispering from a photograph?  A few of the artists participating include Cody DeGrote, Edd Enders, Amber Jean, George Kalantzes, Allie Louise, and Jim Barrett.

Three Masters

August 22nd, 2025 - September 20th, 2025
Opening Reception | August Art Walk - Friday, August 22nd, 2025 | 5:30 pm to 8 pm

Over the years we have worked with many artists at The Frame Garden, these are three of the finest, Colin Alexander, Robert Spannring, and David Swanson.  Native Montana animals such as bison, pronghorns, and bear, are set in the context of their natural habitat in Alexander oil paintings.  Also working in oils, Swansons particular passion is capturing buildings within the landscape or town, often archiving them before they fall down or are removed.  Iconic grain elevators are often a subject of his work. Spannring, on the other hand, works in oil, ink wash, and watercolor.  The ink washes tend to be figurative, either western animals or western people.  His landscapes are typically captured in oil.

The Wonders Around Us

Opening Reception | September Art Walk - Friday, September 26th, 2025 | 5:30 pm to 8 pm
This will be during the introductory “Livingstons Art Week” September 22-27.
This show explores The Wonders Around Us through the works of watercolorist Lynn Bickerton and the painted paper cutouts by Georgia Donovan.  Bickerton’s immersion in Yellowstone and surrounding areas comes through in her depictions of wildlife in their habitats. She also paints the vast and the intimate landscapes that surround us.

Donovan has developed a unique expression of her fascination with the little bugs and wildflowers up to the biggest native wildlife.  “The simple idea of folded and cut paper grew with more details, showing connections in the natural world.  Eventually my traditional oil landscape paintings worked their way into my cut-outs, as I saw the surface of earth and water as “magic carpets.”

Donovan and Bickerton will be doing demonstrations and classes during Art Week.
