Frank was born and raised in Folcroft, (old English word meaning, “Leafy Fields”), PA. Possibly an omen of his future connection to working wood. His father was a carpenter, mason and all-around handy fella. His mother also was very craft oriented always involved with a project crocheting, sewing, or needleworking. Frank’s continued association with wood was helping his father with carpentry projects around the house and later other folks. The sweet smell and shimmering sounds of hand planed pine shavings struck home the romance and allure of woodworking. After graduating high school and a few years of college he entered and completed a four-year apprenticeship with the Philadelphia Carpenters and Joiners Union.
Upon graduation of the apprenticeship, he started his own custom woodworking business, Crown Creations Cabinetmakers, in 1985 and moved to Livingston, Montana in 1988 with a truck load of tools and wood and set up shop. Today the company provides work for 8 shop employees, a part time bookkeeper and a sub-contracted installer working on high-end custom projects within a 500-mile radius. Around 20 years ago he tried his hands at wood turning as a hobby and a side bar to his traditional cabinetmaking. The allure of the lathe took a deep hold and at this stage of his career and woodworking endeavors is major therapy along with enjoying the hills and rivers of Montana and the west; camping and fishing and bird watching. He tells his wife, Sarah, a born and raised 4th generation Livingstonian, “It may not be cheaper than seeing a therapist but sure is a lot more fun” His woodturning business is known as Treen Studios turning wooden bowls, vessels, boxes, ornaments, candlesticks, custom spindles, kitchenware and spinning tops amongst other utilitarian and decorative wooden objects.
