Jim Barrett has been a resident of Park County Montana for over fifty years. With residences in both Livingston and Silvergate/Cooke City, his experience of living in the wilds of Montana, and, specifically, Yellowstone National Park runs very deep. A native of Detroit, Jim emigrated to Montana at a young age and after briefly studying art at the Detroit Institute of the Arts. In Montana, Jim received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from Montana State University in Bozeman. In addition to his art studies, he completed four years of study toward a degree in Architecture. Jim’s artwork has evolved since his early days in Detroit to not only adapt to the subject matter that is his everyday experience in the wilds, but has also evolved stylistically as his education and experimentation guided him in creating his own way of working with color, subject, and expression. Working primarily with pastels and ink on paper his emphasis on bold colors and gestural images combine to create stunning images that capture the essence of the subject while allowing the viewer opportunity for myriad interpretations.
