"My designs are influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement that was popular at the turn of the 19th century. This movement believed in simple designs that were well executed by hand. As society progressed from a rural to an industrial setting, the movement believed that an appreciation of a slower, rural lifestyle was being lost. This included an appreciation of nature and the muted color palette found there.
I choose the glass for my designs to reflect colors and textures found in nature. I spend more time choosing the right glass to represent the bark of an aspen tree, or the perfect blue sky, or the leaves of a fall aspen, than I do in the the construction of the lantern. Sometimes a sheet of glass will suggest a design to me, but there have been times that I have purchased glass for its beauty and movement, not knowing what I would do with it. It can take years for the design to reveal itself from a particular sheet of glass. William Morris, the founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, said 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.' I have found that a lantern is the perfect way to bring beauty and light to a room." - Steve Marti Vertical Divider
